Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero): The NFL fined Steelers safety Jaquan Brisker $17,911 for this hit on Deshaun Watson last week. Watson entered the concussion protocol a day later and has since cleared. Shedeur Sanders is expected to start Sunday vs. New Orleans.
Brisker was flagged for roughing the passer on the play, which came less than a minute and a half into Pittsburgh's win, and he made it clear after the game that he expected a fine and didn't agree with the call. As CBS Sports' Carter Bahns noted, Brisker said:
Watson has since cleared the protocol, but Cleveland is sticking with Shedeur Sanders as its starter for Sunday in New Orleans.
Two other Week 8 fines also came on hits that put a player in the protocol. Raiders defensive back Jeremy Chinn was fined $17,911 for a hit on a defenseless player, a helmet-to-helmet shot on Jets receiver Garrett Wilson along the sideline one play before Chinn sealed the win with an end-zone interception. Wilson reported symptoms the next day and has been ruled out for Sunday against the Chiefs. Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was fined $9,528 for use of the helmet on a hit that jarred the ball loose from Cardinals running back Bam Knight. That play drew no flag, and Knight won't play this week.
Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith was docked twice: $17,911 for a facemask that twisted Josh Allen's head on a touchdown, and another $17,911 for a hit on a defenseless player on a different play.
The league handed out 31 fines in Week 8, the second most of any week this season behind the 38 in Week 2.
