Seahawks' Sam Darnold Out vs. Cardinals With Quad Injury; Drew Lock Starts
Darnold is week-to-week but not headed to injured reserve after getting hurt Monday night in Chicago
Sam Darnold won't play this week. The Seahawks quarterback is out for Sunday's game against the Cardinals with a quad injury, coach Mike Macdonald told reporters Wednesday, and Drew Lock will start in his place, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.
Darnold got hurt Monday night in Seattle's loss to the Bears. The good news for the Seahawks is that it isn't expected to be a long absence. Macdonald called Darnold week-to-week, and he isn't going on injured reserve, Staying off IR keeps open the possibility that he returns as soon as he's healthy, rather than sitting out a mandatory four games.

It's the second time this season Darnold has been sidelined. He dealt with a hip injury before the opener and was ruled out against Arizona in September, also without going on IR, before getting back on the field against Washington. That means this is the second time Lock gets the call against the Cardinals.
Lock is a familiar fill-in. The veteran has bounced between starting and backup roles since Denver drafted him in the second round in 2019, and he's back in Seattle as Darnold's No. 2. He'll inherit an offense that just got healthier at running back, with Zach Charbonnet making his season debut Monday and first-round pick Jadarian Price back from injured reserve. Leaning on that backfield is the obvious way to protect a backup quarterback.
The Seahawks host the Cardinals on Sunday, with Arizona turning to its own backup after naming Gardner Minshew its starter.
