Rams CB Jaylen Watson Out for Season, Needs Shoulder Surgery
The $51 million free-agent corner aggravated a shoulder he dislocated in Week 3, and Sean McVay says surgery will end his year
The Rams just lost one of their best offseason additions. Cornerback Jaylen Watson needs shoulder surgery and will miss the rest of the 2026 season, coach Sean McVay said Wednesday, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Watson dislocated the shoulder in Week 3 and missed the following game, then aggravated it in Sunday's win over the Chargers. He wanted to keep playing through it, but McVay said the team was told "the likelihood of it coming out and doing further damage to it is a very high probability." Surgery became the call after the medical opinions came back.

It's an expensive loss. Los Angeles signed Watson to a three-year, $51 million deal in March, pairing him with his former Chiefs teammate Trent McDuffie to form the starting duo on the outside. McVay said Watson had been "everything and that much more than we had hoped." In seven games he had 24 tackles and an interception, which came against the Bills, and he was one of the tougher corners in the league to complete a pass against when targeted.
Josh Wallace is the most likely answer on the boundary. He has played plenty this season both inside and outside, and moving him outside full-time would leave Quentin Lake to handle the slot.
The timing stings because help is finally arriving up front. Myles Garrett and tight end Terrance Ferguson both returned to practice Wednesday, so the pass rush is getting closer to full strength just as the secondary loses a starter. The Rams are 4-4, third in the NFC West, and visit the Commanders on Sunday, Nov. 8. Watson's 2027 money is guaranteed, so the plan is for the McDuffie-Watson pairing to return next season.
