Panthers Bring Back DeAngelo Hall as Cornerbacks Coach After Evero Firing

Carolina's first staff addition since firing its defensive coordinator reunites the three-time Pro Bowler with interim coordinator Todd Wash and a depleted cornerback room

The Panthers are adding a familiar face to their defensive staff. Carolina is hiring DeAngelo Hall to coach its cornerbacks, The Athletic's Jonathan Jones reported Monday, and the team made it official a short time later.

It's the Panthers' first move since they fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley on Friday. Hall, 42, was Carolina's assistant defensive backs coach in 2023 and 2024 before leaving the team in 2025, and he worked alongside Todd Wash, who joined the staff in 2023 as part of Evero's group. Wash was promoted from defensive line coach to interim coordinator and is now calling the defense.

Hall was a three-time Pro Bowl cornerback as a player, best known for his years in Atlanta and Washington, and this will be his first stint running a position room in Carolina.

He walks into a tough room. Starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) are both on injured reserve, and rookie Will Lee III, who had been filling in as a starter, hurt his hamstring in last week's loss to the Packers. According to ESPN's Mike Kaye, Chau Smith-Wade and Malcolm DeWalt, who was recently promoted from the practice squad, are the only healthy cornerbacks on the 53-man roster entering Week 9. Carolina had to elevate journeyman Marco Wilson to start against Green Bay, and most of the rest of the position group is on the practice squad.

That's the group Hall will have to get ready quickly, with 10 games left in the season. The Panthers host the Broncos on Nov. 8.
