Peyton Manning Not Expected to Be a Candidate for Colts GM Job
The Colts haven't approached the Hall of Fame quarterback about replacing Chris Ballard, and he isn't expected to be interested
Peyton Manning won't be the Colts' next general manager. The Hall of Fame quarterback is not expected to be a candidate for Indianapolis' vacant GM job, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday.
According to Schefter's reporting, the Colts haven't approached Manning about the job, and he isn't expected to want it. He has never trained for or aspired to be a general manager, and between Omaha Productions, the "ManningCast" and two kids in high school, the timing isn't right for a job that demands daily attention. Manning would still listen to NFL opportunities, sources told Schefter, but any future conversations would more likely involve a higher-profile role than running the front office.

The idea had obvious sentimental pull given Manning's history with the franchise, which is now looking for a new direction after firing Chris Ballard last Monday (our story). Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon has said the team will run a thorough search and take the time it needs. Taking Manning off the board narrows that search to more traditional front-office candidates.
What to watch: who the Colts actually request to interview. Whether they go outside the building or lean on chief of personnel Ed Dodds, a longtime Ballard lieutenant, will say a lot about how big a reset Irsay-Gordon wants.
