Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez active against Bears after illness downgrade

New England’s cornerback was questionable with an illness but is available for Thursday night’s game in Chicago

New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez is active for Thursday night’s game against the Chicago Bears after an illness briefly put his availability in doubt. The Patriots had downgraded him to questionable earlier in the evening, but he was not among their inactives.

Gonzalez’s active status resolves the pregame roster question, not how much the illness might affect him on the field. Patriots reporter Mike Reiss said the cornerback would attempt to play through it. New England can use him against Chicago, although the active list alone cannot guarantee a full workload or indicate how he feels once the game begins.

The same inactive list shows other absences in New England’s secondary: cornerbacks Karon Prunty, Channing Canada and Carlton Davis III are out. That makes Gonzalez’s availability particularly relevant to the defensive-back group on a night when several corners are unavailable. Reiss also listed guard/center Ben Brown among the inactives; the Patriots had already placed guard Alijah Vera-Tucker on injured reserve before this game, adding a separate offensive-line concern.

The late illness designation made Gonzalez a game-time question only hours before kickoff. The final roster decision gives the Patriots their cornerback, while the other inactive decisions stand. His participation during the game—not the earlier questionable tag—will show how effectively he can play through the illness.
