Packers' Xavier McKinney Rips Officiating After Costly Roughing Calls in Loss to Lions

Green Bay was flagged for two more roughing-the-passer penalties, giving it eight in seven games, and its All-Pro safety said he'd rather be fined than stay quiet

Matt LaFleur held his tongue on the officiating after Sunday's loss in Detroit. His players didn't.

All-Pro safety Xavier McKinney led the way, telling reporters the calls are "kind of f---ing up the games" and that he'd rather take a fine than stay quiet.

"I would rather get fined and try to help my team out because I see what's going on, and it's killing us,"

The Packers were flagged for two more roughing-the-passer penalties Sunday, bringing their total to eight through seven games. Karl Brooks drew one on the Lions' winning drive, and Brenton Cox Jr. was called for hitting Jared Goff in the third quarter.

The call LaFleur argued hardest also came in the third quarter. Amon-Ra St. Brown appeared to go down after a short catch, then got up and kept running, and Devonte Wyatt tackled him again. Wyatt was flagged for unnecessary roughness, which gave Detroit a first down at the Green Bay 11, and two plays later Goff hit Jameson Williams for a touchdown and a 17-14 lead.

"There was no whistle blown, and the guy continued to run, and our guy didn't hear a whistle," LaFleur said. Referee Alex Moore told a pool reporter the officials ruled the play over, adding, "I can't honestly hear if there was a whistle or not."

Not everyone pinned it on the refs. Tight end Tucker Kraft said, "I don't think the refs lost us the game. We had the game, and we gave it away." Green Bay went 1-for-3 in the red zone, and rookie kicker Trey Smack missed a 26-yard field goal and had a 35-yarder partially blocked with 3:21 left that would have put the Packers ahead. Green Bay fell to 4-3.

McKinney's comments could draw a look from the league office, and he made clear he's fine with that.
