The Seattle Seahawks will be without their starting quarterback on Sunday. Sam Darnold has been ruled out for the Week 2 trip to Arizona because of the glute injury that sidelined him from practice, though the team does not currently plan to place him on injured reserve.

Head coach Mike Macdonald struck an encouraging note about Darnold's recovery when asked whether the quarterback can do anything rehab or training-wise right now, saying Darnold is "killing it on his rehab" and "doing a lot" — he simply can't play Sunday at Arizona, with encouraging signs for Seattle beyond that.

The designation lands two days after the Seahawks first described the issue as a unique short-term soft-tissue injury; a formal ruling out with no IR move suggests Seattle views this as a one-week absence rather than a stint that would cost Darnold a minimum of four games. The Seahawks week 3 game is September 27th, which is about 18 days since the injury.
