The Baltimore Ravens have lost another contributor to a season-ending injury: reserve tight end Durham Smythe tore his Achilles during Sunday's game, and the diagnosis was confirmed by MRI. Ian Rapoport reported the news Tuesday afternoon.
Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet): #Ravens TE Durham Smythe suffered a torn Achilles on Sunday and he's out for the season, the MRI confirmed. Unfortunately, exactly what it appeared Sunday.
The loss lands at a delicate moment for the Ravens, whose quarterback situation is already murky — Lamar Jackson is dealing with a sprained ankle and has only an outside chance to play Sunday against the Falcons, per sources. It also thins a tight end room that was already stretched: Baltimore lost Isaiah Likely (to the Giants) and Charlie Kolar (to the Chargers) in free agency, leaving Smythe and Mark Andrews as the roster's primary tight ends. With Smythe now done for the year, the group's depth behind Andrews is effectively gone.
Smythe was the group's trusted blocking option, the player the Ravens signed last offseason to fill that role after playing alongside new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle in Chicago. His 136 career catches made him a passing threat as well, but it was his two-way dependability that the offense leaned on in rotation. Replacing that midgame will force the Ravens to give additional snaps to whoever is next on the depth chart against Atlanta, with the game plan complicated by the unresolved quarterback situation.
