Bears hold top two running backs D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai out of Wednesday practice

Neither Swift (hip, knee) nor Monangai (thumb, toe) participated Wednesday, leaving Chicago's backfield status in question ahead of Sunday's trip to Green Bay

The Bears got their first concrete practice hint of the week, and it was not a reassuring one for the run game: both of Chicago's top two running backs sat out Wednesday.

D'Andre Swift sat out with hip and knee issues, while Kyle Monangai was held out with thumb and toe injuries. The midweek absence puts Chicago's backfield health squarely in question heading into Sunday's trip to Green Bay.

Swift has been the bell-cow in the Chicago run game this season, and his hip/knee combination is the newest concern after the group has already dealt with a steady stream of nicks. Monangai's status is a separate thread — head coach Ben Johnson said earlier in the week that Monangai's thumb was not an issue but that the 30-carry workload from last week could factor into how much practice work he gets.

The DNP for both backs may simply be a maintenance day after Monangai's heavy workload, or it could carry into game-day designations. Either way, the Bears' practice report Wednesday is the first real signal of how the backfield will be handled against the Packers.
