The Giants' quarterback decision is narrowing, but coach John Harbaugh is not ready to announce it. Harbaugh said Monday the club is "working through" the choice between Jameis Winston and J.J. McCarthy, with no starter named yet for Sunday's game against the Texans.
Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan): John Harbaugh says they're "working through that now" on a quarterback decision between Jameis Winston and J.J. McCarthy. Not ready to name a starter for this week vs. Texans.
Adam Schefter surfaced the update Monday evening, citing ESPN's Jordan Raanan, two days after the Giants' home loss to the Saints and a stretch in which the quarterback and running back positions have both been in flux. The Giants had said coming out of the weekend that the situation was unsettled, with McCarthy's opportunity seen as coming even if not necessarily this week.
That tension is now on the table: Winston has the experience and the trust of the coaching staff, while McCarthy represents the future the franchise has been building around. Whichever way Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy lean, the decision shapes how the Giants approach a Texans defense that has been aggressive under DeMeco Ryans.
