Travis Kelce named victim in $35M Ponzi scheme

Travis Kelce has been robbed twice now — once by burglars, once by a balance sheet. The Chiefs tight end was named in court Tuesday as one of the victims of Siddarth Jawahar, whose Ponzi scheme bilked investors out of more than $35 million.

Jawahar drew an 11-year prison sentence and was ordered to pay over $31 million in restitution. Prosecutors say he poured nearly all of his clients' money into Philip Morris Pakistan, then kept the operation alive by paying old investors with new investors' cash once that bet failed. Kelce's name surfaced via TMZ's account of Tuesday's court proceedings, two years after a burglary at his home made him a crime victim of a more conventional kind. (Pro Football Talk)

Whatever Kelce lost, his football and off-field earnings cushion the blow — but the episode is another reminder that even the savviest-seeming portfolios deserve a second look. When an investment sounds too good to be true, it usually is, no matter whose name is on the account.
