The Bears appear to have already decided who starts at quarterback against the Jets this week — they just are not sharing it. Head coach Ben Johnson said the team knows the "direction" it will go for Week 4 but would not publicly name the starter.
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter): Bears GC Ben Johnson said he knows the "direction" the team will go at quarterback in Week 4, but he won't publicly declare a starter. Story via @CourtneyRCronin: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/50071476/bears-ben-johnson-direction-already-made-week-4-qb
The timing makes the decision a live one. Caleb Williams was held out of Wednesday's walkthrough while managing a hamstring injury, which left the Bears' options narrowed in practice behind him. ESPN's Courtney Cronin listed the candidates as Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum, with Williams feeling less likely given he was not participating.
Johnson has been characteristically coy through the week, telling reporters the team has "three guys" and will "work through the week and see where they're at." When pressed on what would tip the call one way or another, he answered simply: "Whoever we feel like gives us the best chance to win." He added that "the direction has already been made" and that Chicago would "be in good shape for Sunday."
