Joey Porter Jr. will suit up for the Cowboys without a new contract, at least for now, with both sides expecting a deal to eventually get done. The newly acquired cornerback is headed to Dallas after this week's blockbuster trade haul and could play as early as Sunday, per Adam Schefter.
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter): New Cowboys CB Joey Porter Jr. is headed to Dallas without a new contract. He will play for the Cowboys, as early as Sunday, without a new deal, but with both sides hoping and believing they will figure out a way to get it done.
The Cowboys landed Porter Jr., George Pickens and Broderick Jones in a three-player swing that sent a bundle of draft picks back to Pittsburgh, reshaping Dallas's defense ahead of Week 4. Porter Jr. arriving on his existing deal means Dallas gets the former second-round pick's shutdown-corner ceiling immediately, with the extension question parked to the side for now.
The trade itself carries a term designed to protect against an ongoing hold-in, a hedge given Porter Jr.'s contract status was an open question through the process. With no new deal in place, there is a chance — albeit not a certainty — that Porter Jr. plays in Dallas's game Sunday, depending on how quickly he can get up to speed.
The longer-term picture points toward a franchise-tag dilemma between Porter Jr. and Pickens down the road, an issue Dallas will eventually have to weigh. For now, both sides are banking on the simple version: the talent is in the building, and the money will sort itself out.
