The move starts the 21-day clock for San Francisco to activate Williams, a welcome addition to a defensive line that has been hit hard by injuries. The 49ers have lost six players along the front over the past two weeks, including the decision to keep Nick Bosa off injured reserve after a calf injury.
Williams' return would give the 49ers another young, athletic body on the defensive front as they work through the attrition. His activation would be a meaningful reinforcement at a position of need.
San Francisco will ease him back through practice before deciding whether to activate him before the window closes.
