Gonzalez's new deal carries an average of $33.75 million, topping the $33 million per year the Seattle Seahawks gave Devon Witherspoon — the benchmark that had sat atop the cornerback market all summer.

The extension, negotiated by WinSports Group, lands less than 48 hours before the Patriots' season opener Wednesday night against the Seahawks — a game that will put the NFL's two highest-paid cornerbacks on the same field.
The agreement ends weeks of tense, public back-and-forth in which Gonzalez declined to commit to playing the opener without a new deal, the sides at times negotiating through the media. The record contract now locks in the centerpiece of New England's defense through the heart of his prime.
