Jets work out Justin Tucker, Michael Badgley and Josh Karty in ongoing kicker evaluation
The Jets have Blake Grupe on the roster and Jason Sanders on the practice squad, but per Jordan Schultz, Tuesday's workout of the eight-time All-Pro and two other veterans shows the position remains under active review.
The New York Jets are still kicking the tires on kickers. Per Jordan Schultz, the Jets had veteran Justin Tucker — an eight-time All-Pro — along with Michael Badgley and Josh Karty in for a workout Wednesday, the latest step in a continuing evaluation of the position.
Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report): Sources: The #Jets had 8x All-Pro K Justin Tucker, Michael Badgley and Josh Karty in for a workout today. The Jets recently claimed Blake Grupe off waivers and have Jason Sanders on the practice squad, but kicker is a position the team will continue to closely evaluate. Today’s workout is the latest part of that due diligence.
The workout doesn't mean an immediate move is coming. As Schultz notes, the Jets recently claimed Blake Grupe off waivers and have Jason Sanders on the practice squad — but kicker is a position the team will continue to closely evaluate, and Wednesday's session was the latest part of that due diligence.
The interesting name is Tucker, whose resume (8x All-Pro, formerly the most accurate kicker in NFL history) makes him by far the most decorated option the Jets have looked at. He hasn't kicked in the NFL since his Baltimore exit, and any signing would carry a public-perception element on top of the football one — but the Jets' front office clearly wanted a look at what's left in the leg. For now, Grupe is the incumbent; Sanders is the practice-squad insurance; and the Jets' search for certainty at the position continues.
