Giants WR Calvin Austin III carted off practice field with what source calls a serious knee injury

Austin, signed by New York this offseason after starting his career in Pittsburgh, left Tuesday's practice on a cart and now faces an anxious wait for test results with cutdown day approaching.

Tuesday's Giants practice ended with the scariest scene of their summer. Wide receiver Calvin Austin III had to be carted off the field, and according to Adam Schefter, one source described the damage as a serious knee injury.

Austin joined the Giants this offseason after beginning his career with the Steelers, and he had been competing for a spot in New York's receiver rotation throughout camp. Our colleagues at MySportsUpdate noted he was carted off with an apparent knee injury after being signed away from Pittsburgh earlier this year.

The timing is brutal for both sides. The Giants close out the preseason Thursday night and have to trim their roster to 53 players this weekend, which leaves the front office with a difficult decision looming depending on what testing shows. New York has not announced a diagnosis or any corresponding roster move, and the full severity remains unknown until results come back — "serious" was one source's characterization, not a team medical ruling.
