The Falcons may have dodged a major injury scare. Michael Penix Jr., who exited late in Sunday's 30-23 overtime loss to the Ravens with a rib injury, has received encouraging news — sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter the injury is not considered serious and Penix could be back for Sunday's game against the Bears.
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter): Michael Penix's rib injury is not considered serious, per sources. Penix might be able to return for Sunday's game vs. the Bears, but the team wants to be cautious and see him practice this week before it knows whether he will be able to play in Week 6.
Penix was seen in visible discomfort after taking a hit in the fourth quarter at Baltimore, and he underwent an MRI on Monday to assess the extent of the damage. The Falcons will take a cautious approach: even if Penix feels ready, the team wants to see him get through a full week of practice before committing to him as the starter for Week 6.
The timing is favorable for Atlanta. The Bears visit Mercedes-Benz Stadium coming off a lopsided 31-7 loss to the Packers, and Chicago's defense ranks 22nd in the league in sacks per pass attempt — a manageable matchup for a quarterback who may be less mobile than usual. If Penix is cleared, he would face a Chicago secondary that has allowed the second-most passing touchdowns in the NFL this season, providing a prime opportunity to get the Falcons' passing attack back on track after a 3-2 start.
