The Philadelphia Eagles placed Jalen Hurts on injured reserve Saturday after further consultations over a blood clot in his calf. The decision reverses Friday and Saturday morning's expectation that the quarterback would remain off IR, Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport reported.

The roster decision took another turn this weekend. Schefter and Rapoport reported Friday that the Eagles were not planning to use injured reserve while they gathered more medical information. Consultations with doctors and experts continued into Saturday, the reporters said, before Philadelphia chose IR. There was a timing decision with putting Hurts on IR before Sunday's game against the Panthers. The Eagles play 4 games before their bye week, effectively giving Hurts five weeks. If he was expected to miss at a minimum of 3-4 weeks, waiting another week would have kept him out longer.

The medical story began during Philadelphia's October 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams, when Hurts was cleated in the calf. He first sought treatment four days later, according to the Eagles' account. An ultrasound in London then found a superficial clot. Doctors reviewed the scan and cleared him to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars; the team said he played without limitation.

After Hurts returned to Philadelphia, a follow-up ultrasound Wednesday night showed that the clot had moved. The Eagles ruled him out of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers while they worked through treatment decisions. Their earlier statement laid out that sequence without announcing a recovery timetable.

Philadelphia has now made the move official. In the same transaction announcement, the club signed running back Jaydon Blue to its active roster and elevated outside linebacker Keyshawn James-Newby and safety Cole Wisniewski for the Panthers game. The IR move takes Hurts out of that matchup and forces the Eagles to plan beyond a single Sunday without their starting quarterback.

The quarterback decision arrives with other offensive changes already in motion. Philadelphia signed Joe Milton from Dallas's practice squad Friday, and running back Saquon Barkley has been ruled out against Carolina, as this desk reported. The Eagles' Saturday roster announcement does not name a starting quarterback; Hurts' placement settles his availability, not who takes the first snap against the Panthers.
