The Philadelphia Eagles are losing right tackle Lane Johnson immediately: the two-time Super Bowl Champion. six-time Pro Bowler is retiring after 14 seasons, all in Philadelphia.
Johnson's announcement turns the personal absence that kept him out Sunday into a permanent change for the Eagles. Philadelphia ruled him out against the Rams for personal reasons, and Markel Bell started at right tackle; the team now has to address the position beyond a one-game fill-in.
Johnson said he needs to focus on his mental health and could not bring his head and heart fully to football. His retirement statement, shared by Adam Schefter, also closes the book on a career with six Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro honors.
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter): Lane Johnson in his retirement announcement: “Right now, it is critical that I focus on my mental health. I owe it to my teammates, coaches, the organization and the fans to have my head and heart 100 percent in the game.” The six-time Pro Bowl selection and five-time All-Pro says he is finished with playing football.
The immediate question for Philadelphia is how it settles the right side of the line without one of its most decorated veterans. Bell's start Sunday is the latest evidence of the next-man-up situation, but the retirement makes the vacancy a longer-term roster issue.
