The Cowboys have added veteran offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson, bringing in a former first-round pick with 162 career starts as insurance while left guard Tyler Smith recovers from thumb surgery.
Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo): Veteran OL Laken Tomlinson stays in Texas, joining the #Cowboys after being with the #Texans last season. With Tyler Smith down 4-6 weeks following thumb surgery, Tomlinson adds depth to begin the season.
Tomlinson, who spent last season with the Texans, joins Dallas' practice squad The veteran's 162 starts give the Cowboys added veteran protection behind the starting unit. The signing lands as Dallas opens the season without Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler sidelined 4-6 weeks by thumb surgery.
With Smith out 4-6 weeks, the Cowboys are slated to start TJ Bass at left guard against the Giants on Sunday. Tomlinson, a first-round pick of the Lions in 2015, provides proven depth for a line already managing that absence and gives the staff a veteran option if the young group struggles early.
