Baker Mayfield isn't going anywhere. The Buccaneers and their quarterback agreed to a surprise three-year, $165 million contract extension on Tuesday, Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport reported — a deal that keeps the two-time Pro Bowl selection in Tampa through 2029 and ends a contract standoff that once looked headed for an ugly split, struck in the very week the regular season kicks off.

The agreement averages roughly $55 million per season — in line with what established starters have commanded in recent years and takes free agency off the board entirely: Mayfield was scheduled to hit the open market after this season. Instead, the two sides quietly re-engaged in recent weeks after the talks had broken off, and what followed was a fast finish, with Rapoport describing the final push as the two sides working under cover of darkness.
How quickly it all turned. When negotiations collapsed at the start of training camp, Mayfield didn't hide his frustration — he said he felt "disrespected" by what was on the table and made clear he believed he had earned franchise-quarterback treatment in Tampa:
He had set a deadline, the deadline passed without a deal, and the summer carried an open question about whether the biggest season of his Tampa tenure would double as a farewell tour. Mike Garafolo reported the sides were never that far apart when they walked away, and that after a long breath, they came back to the table and finished it.
The resolution also closes the loop on a turbulent camp for Tampa Bay. The summer opened with Vita Vea requesting a trade and Mayfield publicly calling out the team over the failed talks — and the season now begins with both of them extended and satisfied.
For a franchise that has never paid like this, the commitment is a historic one, and it comes with the expectation that the best of the Mayfield era in Tampa is still ahead:

Rather than let the contract cloud hang over the opener, the Buccaneers got it done in the week the games start counting — and a quarterback who spent camp answering questions about his future gets to simply play, with the largest deal in franchise history behind him and the club's career passing records potentially ahead.
