Bears' Kyler Gordon rehabbing away from team with own trainer; return eyed a few weeks into season

Ian Rapoport reports the standout cornerback is working with his own trainer away from the team as he rehabs a calf injury, with a return planned a few weeks into the season

Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon's recovery from his calf injury is happening away from the team. Ian Rapoport reports the standout corner, on injured reserve, has been working with his own trainer to accelerate the recovery, with a plan to return a few weeks into the season.

There is a notable update in tone, too: Rapoport adds there is "some optimism" around the situation. The off-site arrangement is the new detail — rather than rehabbing at the team facility, Gordon is working on his own with a trainer dedicated to getting him back.

Under the league's rules for players on the reserve list, Gordon will miss at least the opening stretch of the season, and a return "a few weeks into the season" means the earliest realistic look at him in a Bears uniform would come a few weeks in. Chicago opens the season this week against Carolina.

For a Bears defense opening the year without one of its standouts, the report at least offers a timeline — if not a fast one.
