The Chargers' offensive line appears set to be without one of its pillars on Sunday, with Pro Bowl right tackle Joe Alt expected to miss Los Angeles' game against the Broncos as he rehabs the neck injury sustained last week at Seattle.
Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet): #Chargers Pro Bowl OT Joe Alt is expected to miss this Sunday's game against the #Broncos with a neck injury, sources say. Alt continues to rehab the injury suffered last week at Seattle, and there are no plans for IR.
There are no plans to place Alt on injured reserve, which leaves the door open for a quicker return as the week progresses. He continued to rehab the injury through the week and was held out of practice Wednesday, part of a thin day along the front: both of Los Angeles' starting tackles and wideout Ladd McConkey sat out of Wednesday's session.
With the AFC West opener against Denver looming, Alt's absence would test the depth of a unit already managing injuries across the line. Jim Harbaugh's club has leaned on its protection to keep the offense moving, and losing a Pro Bowl right tackle for a divisional matchup is a significant early-week concern.
