Browns' Taylen Green "could be" the active No. 2 QB, and there may be packages for him vs. Jacksonville

The Browns may be planning a role for their rookie quarterback on opening day. Head coach Todd Monken said Taylen Green "could be" the active No. 2 quarterback behind Deshaun Watson for the season opener against Jacksonville, and acknowledged it's possible there could be a package of plays for Green, per Mary Kay Cabot.

Monken's answer, relayed by Cabot, left the door open on two fronts — both the backup designation and a specialized package that would get the rookie on the field in certain situations.

Green, the Browns' rookie signal-caller, would give Cleveland a mobile change-of-pace option behind Watson. A package approach would borrow from the playbook of teams that build short-yardage or goal-line series around a young quarterback's legs before handing the full job over. For now, Monken painted it as a real possibility rather than a plan — "It's possible" — with the Browns facing a Jacksonville defense intent on containing Watson and any designed runs the rookie brings. The decision on Green's active status and packages will factor into Cleveland's Week 1 game plan ahead of the opener against the Jaguars.

It could also be a way for the head coach to avoid putting pressure on Watson to be pulled from the game in favor of Sanders, whom Watson edged out as QB1.
