CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways, ending the former Cowboys quarterback's nine-year run as the network's No. 1 NFL color analyst.
Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate): BREAKING: CBS and Tony Romo have mutually parted ways.
Romo had been on indefinite leave since July following a DWI arrest in Wisconsin, with JJ Watt stepping in alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson in the interim. In a statement, Romo said he is proud of what he accomplished at CBS over the past nine years and plans to use the time to focus on his health and family before moving on to his next opportunity.
CBS confirmed that Jim Nantz and JJ Watt will remain together as the network's No. 1 broadcast team for the rest of this season, with no further comment on what happens beyond that. The move closes a chapter for one of the most recognizable voices in NFL broadcasting, who rose to prominence for his uncanny ability to call plays before they happened.
The parting comes as CBS reshapes its top booth, and the decision on a permanent successor to Romo will be one of the most-watched storylines in sports media heading into the offseason.
