The Houston Texans will not negotiate a new contract with quarterback C.J. Stroud during the regular season. General manager Nick Caserio said the team has had talks with the 2023 first-round pick about a new deal, but those discussions will be put on hold once Houston faces the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.
"If we don't get it figured out before the season starts, then it'll be something we address in the offseason," Caserio said, via DJ Bien-Amie of ESPN.com. It is the same approach the Steelers have long taken, declining to negotiate with players once the regular season begins.
The Texans have already picked up their option on Stroud's contract for 2027, so the quarterback remains under contract regardless of how this season plays out. A strong campaign would make it harder for Houston to keep playing the waiting game, but the team has signaled it will stick to its deadline either way.
