Panthers starters likely to sit preseason finale if joint practice work goes well
Dave Canales said Carolina's starters will probably skip Friday's game against Houston if they get enough reps in Wednesday's joint practice.
Panthers fans hoping for one last look at Bryce Young and the first-team offense before the games count will likely be disappointed. Coach Dave Canales said Monday that if the starters get enough work in Wednesday's joint practice against Houston, they will probably not play in Friday's preseason finale.

It's the calculus most of the league now runs in the final week: a full-speed joint practice against another roster delivers more useful, controlled reps than a quarter of game action against backups, without the injury exposure. Carolina's first-team offense showed real progress in last week's win at Jacksonville — moving the chains behind a much-improved performance after a quiet opener — so the staff has tape to build on already.
The schedule sets up cleanly for that approach. The Panthers returned to practice fields Monday, host the Texans for Wednesday's joint session, then close the exhibition slate Friday at home before trimming the roster to 53 by Sunday at 6 p.m. ET. The bubble players fighting for the final spots will get the full stage in Friday's game regardless.
For a Panthers team with playoff expectations after last season's step forward, keeping Young and the core healthy into Week 1 at Atlanta is the priority that outweighs any August stat line.
