Carolina's depth took a few hits coming out of Saturday's preseason loss. Third-string quarterback Haynes King will not play this week, and the Panthers also have Ja'seem Reed (calf), Will Lee (groin) and Cam Gill (shoulder) sidelined with injuries picked up in that game.
Joseph Person (@josephperson): Haynes King won’t play this week. Ja’seem Reed (calf), Will Lee (groin) and Cam Gill (shoulder) all sidelined today with injuries sustained Saturday.
Lee's issue is the one to watch most closely. The staff said imaging on his groin came back clean and described it as a matter of getting 'a little bit more back in the tank' before returning — reassuring language that suggests no structural damage.
King's absence robs the Panthers of a camp arm in the preseason Week 2 evaluation, but with the top two quarterbacks ahead of him, the bigger immediate concern is the health of the skill-position and defensive players who went down.
Head coach Dave Canales also confirmed the newly signed Darren Waller is in a return-to-play ramp and unlikely to practice against Jacksonville, easing the veteran tight end in slowly. Between the newcomers and the injury list, Carolina is managing its roster carefully in the back half of August.
