The Lions still expect to have safety Kerby Joseph on the field this season, but Detroit is not attaching a date to it. Dan Campbell said Joseph is doing well and repeated that he anticipates the veteran returning at some point in 2026.

Joseph's absence has been one of the longer-running items on Detroit's injury list, a knee issue the club has managed conservatively rather than rushed. Campbell's comments are the clearest signal yet that the Lions view it as a matter of when he returns rather than whether, even though the coaching staff is deliberately avoiding a target week.
The safety room is trending in a more encouraging direction overall. Brian Branch is working back toward game action, and Campbell has laid out plans for how the Lions will use both Branch and center Cade Mays as they return.
Having Branch back changes the shape of what Detroit can do defensively, and it also buys Joseph time. The Lions can keep rotating coverage responsibilities without forcing Joseph onto the field before the knee responds, which is precisely the approach their messaging has reflected for weeks.
Detroit hosts Green Bay on Sunday, a game with plenty of coverage stress built into it. If Joseph is not available for that one, the Lions at least go into it with more depth in the secondary than they have had for much of the season.
