The Lions are adding more veteran help to a depleted secondary, with defensive back Jalen Mills headed to the practice squad.
Mills, a 10-year veteran, was with Detroit for part of last season and now returns to help a defensive backfield that has been hit hard by injuries. The move comes after the Lions brought in several veteran defensive backs for workouts Monday — Mills among them — as they search for outside help following the loss of Avonte Maddox for the season and with safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph on the PUP list.
Adding Mills to the practice squad gives Detroit insurance and a familiar, experienced option to call up as it prepares for a Week 3 game against the Jets.
