The Giants have moved on from their longest-tenured player. New York released veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton, the team announced Monday — days before the season opener.
The move itself isn't surprising as much as the timing. Slayton was set to make $13 million this season in the second year of a three-year, $36 million contract, with most of that money guaranteed. He had slid to the bottom of the Giants' wide receiver depth chart, and there were many rumors of him being cut last weekend.
Slayton finishes his Giants' tenure with 296 catches, 4,435 yards and 22 touchdowns over 106 games in seven seasons — the 2019 fifth-round pick had been with the organization since arriving out of Auburn. The Giants announced the move officially, closing the book on a steady, well-regarded presence in East Rutherford who handled the exit with class, per Ari Meirov.
