Falcons' Michael Penix still not cleared for 11-on-11 work

Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will sit out 11-on-11 sessions this week as he continues his return from a knee injury, the club said Monday.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will not participate in 11-on-11 work this week, the team said Monday, as he continues to work back from the knee injury that has limited him throughout camp.

Penix has been a fixture in individual and 7-on-7 drills but has yet to be cleared for full team periods. Reporting from the Falcons beat has tracked the same theme for weeks: head coach Kevin Stefanski has said the club is "closer" to clearing Penix for 11-on-11, but a hard return date has never been set. Penix himself said he knew roughly a week ago he would not be cleared for team sessions this week.

The limitation matters because Stefanski has been clear that an un-cleared quarterback cannot play in a preseason game. With veteran Tua Tagovailoa — signed this offseason — handling the early first-team reps and the Falcons reluctant to rush Penix, the club appears content to let the rehab calendar dictate the pace rather than force a timeline.

Atlanta has framed the situation as precautionary, not alarming. Still, every week Penix misses team work pushes his readiness for the regular-season opener further into question and keeps the quarterback competition — such as it is — from truly starting.
