RUMOR: Zach Ertz reunion with Eagles on the table ahead of Week 1

A Zach Ertz reunion with the Eagles is on the table, according to league sources relayed by EJ Smith of PHLY as Philadelphia sorts out its tight end room.

Nothing is imminent, Smith reports. Ertz, who turns 35 this season, is nearing the nine-month mark of recovery from a knee injury suffered Dec. 7 and was cleared for football activities earlier this month. The Eagles carried four tight ends (Dallas Goedert, Johnny Mundt, Eli Stowers and EJ Jenkins), but Stowers is sidelined with a hamstring injury and still developing as he has had a quiet rookie summer, leaving the room short of proven depth behind Goedert.

A reunion carries nostalgic weight as well. Ertz is 10 catches shy of Harold Carmichael's franchise record for receptions, and general manager Howie Roseman has never shied from bringing franchise greats back, having traded for DeSean Jackson and re-signed Nick Foles. That backdrop, plus a real need at the position, is why this one is building steam heading into the Sept. 13 opener against the Commanders — even if no deal is close yet.
