Cowboys rule out RB Malik Davis with 'pretty serious' hip injury

The Cowboys will be without their No. 2 running back in Sunday's opener, and they are preparing for the absence to run longer than that. Dallas ruled out Malik Davis on Friday after he was carted off the practice field with a hip injury.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones described the injury as "pretty serious" during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan. "Unfortunately, I think he's looking at a pretty serious injury that could take him out for some period of time," Jones said. "We don't have the final details, we'll know more, but certainly so disappointed for Malik. Obviously, tough for our team, but like anything, it's next man up."
Davis had won the backup job behind Javonte Williams and was expected to carry a meaningful share of the workload. Dallas' initial 53-player roster kept only those two running backs before the team claimed veteran Emari Demercado off waivers as a third option.
Israel Abanikanda is on the practice squad and will likely be elevated for Sunday's game. Every other player on the Cowboys' roster had full participation Friday, and no one besides Davis carries an injury designation into the opener.
