Washington moved two starters to injured reserve and restocked the secondary and interior with familiar names ahead of Week 1.
The Commanders made a pair of roster-shaping moves ahead of Week 1, placing defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton and left tackle Laremy Tunsil on injured reserve, per Adam Schefter.
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter): Commanders placed DT Jer’Zhan Newton and T Laremy Tunsil on injured reserve. Commanders re-signed CB Fabian Moreau and DT Shy Tuttle.
Both players retain a chance to return this season, giving Washington flexibility to stash them early while maintaining a path back to the active roster later in the year. The moves clear two spots on the 53-man roster, and the Commanders used that space to re-sign cornerback Fabian Moreau and defensive tackle Shy Tuttle. Moreau provides experienced depth in the secondary, while Tuttle adds interior rotation alongside the unit's other healthy tackles.
By placing Newton and Tunsil on IR instead of cutting them, Washington keeps them under contract and avoids sending two potential contributors to the waiver wire. The timing also lines up with the final roster cut window, when teams are often looking for offensive-line and defensive-line depth.
