Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater underwent successful ankle surgery Thursday in Los Angeles, a tight-rope procedure designed to accelerate his return from the high-ankle sprain he suffered in Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet): #Chargers OT Rashawn Slater underwent successful ankle surgery yesterday in LA, a tight-rope procedure aimed at accelerating his return from a high-ankle sprain. Slater, who was injured in Sunday's game vs the #Seahawks, will be placed on Injured Reserve and begin rehabbing.
Slater will be placed on Injured Reserve and begin rehabbing immediately, a move that officially puts his status for the coming weeks on hold. Under league rules a player on IR must miss at least four games, so Los Angeles will lean on its backup tackle options on the blind side as it waits out the initial window.
Losing Slater is a meaningful blow to an offensive line that protects quarterback Justin Herbert. The All-Pro tackle went down during Week 4's matchup in Seattle, and the club had already been managing rotation along the front while trying to keep Herbert clean. With the tight-rope procedure behind him, the goal now is a quicker-than-typical return once the mandated four games are served.
