The Buccaneers are adding veteran safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, who reached an agreement on a one-year deal with the club on Tuesday.
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter): Veteran safety Ifeatu Melifonwu reached agreement today on a one-year deal with the Bucs.
Adam Schefter reported the agreement. Melifonwu, a veteran of several NFL stops, gives Tampa Bay an experienced option in the back end of a secondary that is still sorting out its rotation early in the season.
With the Bucs coming off a Week 3 that saw their defense challenged and key pieces hobbled across the roster, adding a proven safety on a short-term deal is a low-cost way to bolster depth. Melifonwu's versatility across the secondary should give Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles and defensive staff flexibility as the club heads into a Week 4 matchup.
