Kyle Shanahan: Nick Bosa 'making a lot of progress' in ACL-rehab return
The 49ers edge rusher is trending the right way in his return from offseason knee surgery, with Shanahan noting far less irritation and soreness than a week ago.
The 49ers got encouraging news on their defensive cornerstone Tuesday, as Kyle Shanahan said Nick Bosa is "making a lot of progress" in his return from offseason ACL-rehab work.
Cam Inman (@CamInman): More 49ers updates from KS Nick Bosa is "making progress, a lot less irritation, soreness, tendinitis than last week. Going right direction" Mykel Williams "close. Week 1 would be long shot but haven't ruled it out. He's progressing well"
Bosa has been working back from surgery on his right knee, and the reigning All-Pro's availability for Week 1 has been the quiet subplot of San Francisco's camp. Shanahan told Bay Area reporters the tendinitis and soreness that slowed Bosa last week have eased considerably. "A lot less irritation, soreness, tendinitis than last week," Shanahan said. "Going right direction."
The same update shed light on rookie edge Mykel Williams, whom Shanahan called "close" but a "long shot" for Week 1, while stopping short of ruling him out. For a 49ers front seven built to pressure opposing passers, having Bosa ramping up — even if managed carefully through the preseason — is the difference between a feared unit and a patchwork one. The coaching staff has repeatedly framed the knee soreness as routine for an ACL return, and Tuesday's comments are the clearest signal yet that the plan is working.
