49ers open Christian Kirk's practice window; promote DL Ogbo Okoronkwo to active roster

The 49ers took two roster steps Thursday aimed at fortifying a banged-up receiving corps and replenishing their defensive line depth. San Francisco opened the 21-day practice window for wide receiver Christian Kirk, who has spent the entire season on injured reserve with a calf injury, while also promoting defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo from the practice squad to the active roster.

Kirk, acquired from the Jaguars in a trade this offseason, has yet to suit up for the 49ers. He landed on IR after suffering a calf injury during training camp and has been rehabbing ever since. The 28-year-old veteran had 67 catches for 847 yards and three touchdowns in Jacksonville last season before being traded as part of the Jaguars' organizational overhaul.

With the 21-day window now open, the 49ers have three weeks to evaluate Kirk in practice before deciding whether to activate him to the 53-man roster or keep him on IR for the remainder of the season. The timing is notable: San Francisco's receiving group has been thinned by injuries, and Kirk's route-running and slot experience could provide an immediate boost alongside Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel.

The promotion of Okoronkwo adds a seasoned pass-rusher to the rotation. The veteran defensive lineman has 22 career sacks over six NFL seasons with the Texans, Browns, and Titans. He joined the 49ers' practice squad earlier this season after being released by the Titans in final roster cuts. Okoronkwo's arrival helps offset the loss of Keion White, who was shot last week and remains hospitalized.

Both moves come as the 49ers (3-2) prepare for a Monday night matchup against the Washington Commanders in Week 6.
