The San Francisco 49ers' vaunted defensive front took another hit Thursday when five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Nick Bosa pulled his calf during practice. The team is now planning to be without him for a few weeks — including this Sunday's matchup against the Arizona Cardinals — with an injured-reserve placement still being weighed.
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter): Five-time Pro-Bowl DE Nick Bosa pulled his calf during Thursday's practice and now is expected to miss "a few weeks", including Sunday's game vs. the Cardinals, sources tell me and @RapSheet. The team is figuring out whether or not Bosa needs to be placed on injured reserve.
Ian Rapoport echoed the report, confirming Bosa is out this week against Arizona and that the club has not yet decided whether the injury warrants injured reserve. The 49ers are 2-0 and have leaned heavily on their defensive line early in the season, which makes the timing of the loss sting.
Bosa's setback is compounded by a brutal run of attrition up front. Schefter noted the 49ers have now seen six defensive linemen go down over the past two weeks: Nick Bosa (calf), Alfred Collins (torn patellar tendon, season-ending), Sam Okuayinonu (broken foot), James Thompson Jr. (high-ankle sprain), Romello Height (broken hand) and C.J. West (bone chip in knee). Rookie Mykel Williams remains on the PUP list recovering from last season's ACL tear.
How the 49ers handle the Bosa decision and absorb the losses across the defensive line will shape their approach to a Cardinals offense that has been aggressive through three weeks.
