The 49ers have decided not to place Nick Bosa on injured reserve, keeping their star pass rusher on the active roster despite the calf injury that will sideline him for a few weeks.
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter): 49ers have decided not to place DE Nick Bosa on injured reserve, per league source. Bosa pulled his calf muscle at Thursday's practice and now is expected to miss a few weeks - but avoid IR.
Bosa pulled his calf muscle during Thursday's practice and is expected to miss a few weeks, but the team has opted against the IR designation. That means he won't be subject to the minimum four-game absence that comes with an IR stint, giving San Francisco more flexibility on when he returns.
The decision comes as the 49ers have been hit hard along the defensive line, losing six players over the past two weeks. The team worked out pass rushers Matt Judon, Jamin Davis, Julian Okwara and Dawuane Smoot on Saturday as it looks to shore up the position in Bosa's absence.
Keeping Bosa off IR is a sign the 49ers believe his recovery will be on the shorter end of the timeline, and it preserves the option of an earlier return. For now, the defense will have to hold up without its best edge rusher against a demanding stretch of the schedule.
