Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero): The Lions are waiving rookie QB Luke Altmyer, per source. Detroit wants Altmyer back on the practice squad if he clears waivers. But veteran Josh Dobbs will back up Jared Goff.
Pelissero notes veteran Josh Dobbs will back up Jared Goff, settling Detroit's depth chart behind the starter as the Lions finalize their 53-man roster. Altmyer, an undrafted rookie, showed enough in camp to warrant a practice-squad retention attempt, but the Lions are comfortable proceeding with Dobbs as the No. 2. The move is a routine cutdown-day calculation for a contender with a settled quarterback room.
