Judge denies request to seal evidence in Josh Jacobs' criminal case

The judge who presided over Packers RB Josh Jacobs' criminal case denied the victim's request to have evidence permanently sealed and turned the matter over to the police department, per Adam Schefter

The judge who presided over Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs' criminal case denied a request by the victim to have evidence permanently sealed, instead turning the matter over to the police department that conducted the investigation, per Adam Schefter.

Brown County (Wisconsin) District Court judge Marc A. Hammer made the determination during a hearing Thursday, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky. When his order takes effect Friday, it will cancel a temporary sealing order he issued Sept. 10 — the same day Jacobs entered his no contest plea.

The records include surveillance video that, per the criminal report, shows a portion of the May 23 incident at Jacobs' home. Rather than an immediate release, the Hobart/Lawrence police department will now handle any new public-records requests; ESPN and other outlets must resubmit theirs once the seal lifts.

Jacobs was placed on the NFL's commissioner exempt list on Aug. 30 and cannot play or practice. A permanent seal could have kept the NFL from reviewing the video during its investigation, which could lead to a suspension. Thursday's ruling does not guarantee the league will get the footage, but it keeps that door open.
