The rookie back left Saturday's preseason game in an ambulance after suffering a head injury — an alarming scene for any sideline — though the team quickly reported afterward that he had movement in all of his extremities. Waiving him with an injury designation means he'll revert to injured reserve if he clears waivers, with his Philadelphia tenure likely over either way.
Gray's release is more routine. The veteran special-teamer and former Saints Pro Bowl gunner was brought in this summer to compete for a backup safety and coverage role, but the Eagles' decision to move on suggests the numbers game at the back of the roster simply caught up with him.
Both moves shrink the margin ahead of Sunday's 6 p.m. ET deadline, when Philadelphia must set its 53-man roster. They came alongside a busy medical day at NovaCare Complex: ten players missed practice entirely, including Markel Bell (thumb/leg), Grant Calcaterra (back), Willie Lampkin (stinger) and Cole Wisniewski (concussion), while rookie receiver Makai Lemon made a full return from a hamstring issue and participated in 7-on-7s.
