Dolphins LB Stephen Dix signed in the morning, called the defense that night
Claimed Friday and in the building Saturday at dawn, the new linebacker ran Jeff Hafley's defense in a preseason game hours later — a whirlwind the Miami coach called a story in itself.
Most new signings spend their first day in a playbook. Stephen Dix spent his calling an NFL defense. The linebacker, added Friday and landed in Miami on Saturday morning, was relaying play calls in the huddle by the time the Dolphins kicked off against the Giants that afternoon.
David Furones (@DavidFurones_): Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley revealed today that he had new LB Stephen Dix, who was just added Friday and arrived Saturday morning, calling plays defensively in Saturday's preseason game. 'That’s how our league works. It's like calling in a linebacker, walking to my office saying, ‘Hey, how you doing? My name is Jeff and you're going to play real football for us today.’ Where else in the world does that happen? I mean, the guy literally showed up this morning, didn't know his team and was giving calls in the huddle. That is a story. I respect, that though, man. That guy played hard.'
Coach Jeff Hafley could barely believe it himself. He described the scene of calling a linebacker into his office, introducing himself, and telling the player he'd be running real football calls that day — a whirlwind he said simply reflects how the league works when a roster spot opens and a body is needed. What impressed him most was that Dix, who didn't know his teammates' names yet, still played hard.

Dix's crash course fit a night of improvisation for Miami. The Dolphins also claimed cornerback Jai'Onte' McMillan off waivers from Indianapolis at halftime, and quarterback Cam Miller saw significant second-half action while the reserves labored through what Hafley flatly assessed as not good enough after the loss.
With final cuts due August 30, Dix's ability to absorb a defense overnight is precisely the kind of audition that decides the back end of a roster — and he may have just played his way onto it.
