Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Marist Liufau is set to undergo surgery as early as Monday after fracturing his left forearm in Friday's preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The injury removes a key rotational piece from Dallas's edge group just days before the team must trim its roster to 53. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters Liufau suffered the broken forearm and could go under the knife as soon as Monday, declining to put a firm timetable on a return but saying it would be measured in weeks rather than days.

The timing matters because NFL clubs must reach the 53-man limit by Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. A multi-week absence places Liufau firmly in the conversation for one of the Cowboys' two injured-reserve/designated-to-return slots, which allow a player to miss the first four games before returning midseason.
