The Colts have signed veteran defensive end Carl Lawson to the practice squad, adding edge depth after losing Arden Key for a few weeks to injury.
Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo): The #Colts announced the signing of veteran DE Carl Lawson to the practice squad. Played two seasons for Indy DC Lou Anarumo when both were with the #Bengals.
Lawson is a familiar fit for Indianapolis defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo — the two spent two seasons together with the Bengals. With Key's absence leaving the Colts shorthanded on the edge, the move gives Anarumo an experienced body to work with as the rotation shakes out. Ian Rapoport framed the pickup as a direct response to the Key injury, with the veteran Lawson slotting onto the practice squad rather than the 53-man roster.
The signing reunites a veteran with a history of production rushing the passer with a coordinator who knows him well, which should speed the integration. Lawson gives the Colts a proven option to call up as the pass-rush unit deals with the short-term hit from Key's injury.
