NFL owners approve G5 financing for Browns' new stadium

Cleveland cleared another funding hurdle for its Brook Park project as owners signed off on a G5 loan, the league's stadium financing program that can cover up to $300 million

Cleveland's next stadium cleared a significant funding checkpoint Tuesday when NFL owners approved G5 financing for the Browns' Brook Park project, keeping the club on the timeline it has targeted for a 2029 opening.

G5 is the league's loan system for construction and renovation, a mechanism that lets a club borrow against the league's own credit rather than the open market, and it can cover as much as $300 million of a project. For the Browns, owner approval converts a planned funding source into an available one, which is the kind of procedural step that rarely generates headlines but governs whether a construction schedule holds.

The project itself is well past the planning stage: the Browns' new home, Huntington Bank Field, is under construction in Brook Park with a 2029 target date, replacing the downtown lakefront stadium the team has played in for decades. Cleveland has been working through the financing layers for years, and Tuesday's vote resolves the league-side piece of that stack.

League approval of a G5 loan does not finish the job on its own. It sits alongside the club's own contribution and the public money committed to the project, and construction milestones still drive whether the 2029 date holds. But it removes an uncertainty that had been sitting over the financing plan, and it puts the Browns among the clubs whose stadium funding has now been formally cleared by the ownership group.

The vote came during the same owners meetings at which the league addressed the Jalen Hurts medical case, a reminder that October's fall meeting agenda runs well beyond the standings.
